There is strong medical evidence that smoking tobacco is related to more than two dozen diseases and conditions. It has negative effects on nearly every organ of the body and reduces overall health. How Does Smoke Affect Cholesterol?
Smoking tobacco in any form, even cigars, will have the effect of increasing LDL cholesterol and decreasing HDL cholesterol. It also slightly increases triglycerides. This is a triple whammy because it negatively affects all your cholesterol levels. Cholesterol levels have a direct correlation with coronary artery disease also known as atherosclerosis.
Smoking Cause Heart Disease
The current data demonstrate that the ill effects of secondhand smoke result from many components of tobacco smoke. These include carbon monoxide, nicotine, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and others.
The carbon monoxide produced by passive smoking competes with oxygen for binding sites on red blood cells. This reduces the blood's ability to deliver oxygen to the heart and compromises the heart muscle's ability to use oxygen to create adenosine triphosphate. The carbon monoxide also increases the amount of lactate in venous blood.
What about cigar and pipe smoking?
People who smoke cigars or pipes seem to have a higher risk of death from coronary heart disease (and possibly stroke), but their risk isn't as great as that of cigarette smokers. This is probably because they're less likely to inhale the smoke. Currently there's very little scientific information on cigar and pipe smoking and cardiovascular disease, especially among young men, who represent the vast majority of cigar users.
Smoking Cause Acne In Women
New findings link Acne in women who smoke. Italian researchers from the San Gallicano Dermatological Institute in Rome have found that smoking causes acne in human and affects women the most. They discovered a particular type of acne known as NIA (non inflammatory acne), which is common in smoker. This type of acne in smoker is characterised by blocked pores, large blackheads, which are less inflamed than normal acne.
Increased risk of illness. Studies show that smokers get more colds, flu, bronchitis, and pneumonia than nonsmokers. And people with certain health conditions, like asthma, become more sick if they smoke (and often if they're just around people who smoke). Because teens who smoke as a way to manage weight often light up instead of eating, their bodies lack the nutrients they need to grow, develop, and fight off illness properly.
The report concludes that smoking reduces the overall health of smokers, contributing to such conditions as hip fractures, complications from diabetes, increased wound infections following surgery, and a wide range of reproductive complications. For every premature death caused each year by smoking, there are at least 20 smokers living with a serious smoking-related illness.

I don’t often talk about this to my friends who still smoke, but I am convinced that one of the reasons that I failed to give up smoking so many times was that they would not let me!
What do I mean?
Well, here’s an example. It was one Friday night a long time ago and I had decided to give up smoking. At that time, my Friday night and Saturday nights were basically my whole life! I worked hard during the week and Friday and Saturday nights were my time to let loose and relax in bars and clubs with my friends.
You’re probably thinking that a Friday night was not the best time to decide to quit smoking – you’re right! About three beers later the thought of not having a cigarette was starting to become unbearable. All the girls I wanted to go talk to were smoking too.
So that was my situation. Surrounded by my friends having a great time (and smoking), the great looking ladies having a great time (and smoking). So……next thing you know, I’m having a great time (and smoking).
I initially thought that my apparent total lack of willpower stemmed from the amount of beer coursing through my system and reducing my ability to resist a smoke. But that wasn’t the real reason. It was a contributory factor, certainly, but it wasn’t the determining factor.
The real reason I think that I had a pack of cigarettes that night is that my friends who smoked did not want me to leave their ‘private smoking club’. Strange, but the more I think about it, the more I think it’s true.
Maybe it’s because smoking is a ‘them versus us’ activity, where the smoker is the ‘little guy’ valiantly fighting for his or her right to taint themselves with this peculiar habit.
“At least they didn’t stop me smoking, damn it”
The smoker will cry, victoriously raising a nicotine stained hand up to the skies, before noisily hacking their lungs up into a hospital kidney dish and passing over to the other side.
Sorry. I do get carried away sometimes. The danger of the smug ex-smoker I guess.
Back to my theory. I think that when a friend of a group of smoking friends expresses their desire to quit smoking, the others in the group (albeit subconsciously) try to prevent you from doing so. The reasons are not because your friends do not like you or don’t want you to be happy. Quite the opposite. They like you, so they don’t want you to leave their inner circle.
Be aware of this and be prepared for it. That way you are expecting it to happen and can plan a strategy to stop it becoming yet another failed giving up attempt.

The rosy picture of cigarette commercials is a far cry from the grim reality that smoking brings. Rather than help you cope with the complexities of modern living, smoking brings many people closer to the grave.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said adult male smokers lose an average of 13.2 years of life while female smokers lose 14.5 years of life.

How much damage smoking does to your body depends on the type of tobacco, the form it is smoked, the temperature it is burned, the length of time you have been smoking and your general state of health. Experts say cigarette smoking is the most dangerous form and every cigarette you smoke shortens your life.
Cigarette smokers are twice as likely to die before middle age and the average smoker aged 35 has a life expectancy five and a half years shorter than a non-smoker. In many cases, these deaths are caused by cancer.
“Cigarette smoking accounts for at least 30 percent of all cancer deaths. It is a major cause of cancers of the lung, larynx (voice box), oral cavity, pharynx (throat), esophagus (swallowing tube connected to the stomach), and bladder, and it contributes to the development of cancers of the pancreas, cervix, kidney, stomach, and also some leukemias,” according to the American Cancer Society (ACS).
“Smoking is responsible for about 87 percent of lung cancer deaths. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women, and is one of the most difficult cancers to treat. Lung cancer is a disease that can in many cases be prevented. Groups that promote non-smoking as part of their religion, such as Mormons and Seventh-day Adventists, have much lower rates of lung cancer and other smoking-related cancers,” it added.
Aside from lung cancer, smoking damages the cardiovascular, respiratory and digestive systems of the body. The irritating substances found in a cigarette can disturb the bronchial passages and fill the lungs with mucus.
Normally, glands in the interior lining of the lungs constantly produce mucus. Together with dirt and bacteria, the mucus is expelled from the lungs by the action of cilia or small hair-like projections.
Inhaled smoke, however, interferes with the action of cilia and stimulates mucus production. Because of this, mucus, tar and other bacteria are trapped in the lungs. Smoker's cough is a sign that the lungs are clogged with mucus and coughing is the body’s attempt to get rid of tar and phlegm.
Bacteria in the lungs can later lead to bronchitis (the Inflammation of the bronchial tubes) or emphysema in which the air passages of the lungs are enlarged. This makes breathing difficult and can damage the heart. Atherosclerosis (the hardening of the arteries) and thrombosis (the formation of blood clots) are common in smokers because the level of fatty acids and cholesterol in the blood is raised.

What makes smoking dangerous? What chemicals are found in cigarettes that make smoking a deadly habit?
Cigarettes are made from dried tobacco leaves that contain over 4,000 chemicals including ingredients that are added for flavor. Of that number, 60 are known carcinogens or cancer-causing agents. In addition, tobacco and tobacco smoke have co-carcinogens that don't lead to cancer but can accelerate its growth.
“There are hundreds of substances added to cigarettes by manufacturers to enhance the flavor or to make the smoking experience more pleasant. Some of the compounds found in tobacco smoke include ammonia, tar, and carbon monoxide. Exactly what effects these substances have on the cigarette smoker’s health is unknown, but there is no evidence that lowering the tar content of a cigarette improves the health risk. Manufacturers do not usually give out information to the public about the additives used in cigarettes, so it is hard to know the health risks,” revealed the American Cancer Society (ACS).
One chemical found in cigarettes that we do know is nicotine, a powerful poison and an addicting drug that quickly spreads throughout the body. Nicotine is the reason why many people find it difficult to quit smoking. The US Surgeon General said nicotine addiction is similar to addiction to other drugs like heroin and cocaine.
“Although 70 percent of smokers want to quit and more than 40 percent try to quit each year, fewer than 5 percent succeed. This is because smokers not only become physically addicted to nicotine; there is a strong emotional (psychological) aspect and they often link smoking with many social activities. All of these factors make smoking a hard habit to break,” according to the ACS.
A 70 milligram-injection of nicotine can kill you. Cigarettes contain about 0.5 to 2 milligrams (mg) of nicotine depending on how the tobacco was cured. How much of this is absorbed by smokers depends on the way they smoke.
If they inhale tobacco, they can absorb as much as 90 percent of this poison. This can affect their nervous system, brain and heart rate.
“Tobacco companies are required by law to report nicotine levels in cigarettes to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), but in most states they are not required to show the amount of nicotine on the cigarette package label. The actual amount of nicotine available to the smoker in a given brand of cigarettes is often different from the level reported to the FTC. In one regular cigarette, the average amount of nicotine the smoker gets ranges between about 1 mg and 2 mg,” the ACS said.

Drew Barrymore started smoking at 9 ½ years old and smokes 2 – 3 packs a day. Model Kate Moss smokes four packs a day and has been smoking since age 12. These are just a few of the people who have glamorized smoking. Their image has helped advertisers and cigarette manufacturers sell millions of cigarettes all over the world. The United States alone is the home of over 40 million adult smokers, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). More than 1 out of 5 people smoke and the numbers are higher in younger age groups.
“In 2006, CDC reported almost 24 percent of those 18 to 44 years old were current smokers, compared to 10.2 percent in those aged 65 or older. Nationwide, 22.3 percent of high school students and 8.1 percent of middle school students were smoking in 2004. More White and Hispanic students smoked cigarettes,” according to the American Cancer Society (ACS).
Traditionally, smokers have always been pictured as brave, bold people who love adventure and the good things in life. But behind this glamorous and sophisticated image is a grim message of death. The little pleasure one gets from smoking is a high price to pay for the many bad effects this deadly habit brings.
Consider these cases: American actress Bette Davis fought a losing battle with breast cancer and died in 1989 after suffering from several strokes caused by smoking. Singer/actor Sammy Davis Jr. died of throat cancer from smoking at age 64. Years of smoking also caught up with Walt Disney who died of lung cancer at 65. So did former Beatles member George Harrison and more recently Peter Jennings, former anchor of ABC World News Tonight.
Since 1982, the US Surgeon General has warned that smoking is the major single cause of cancer mortality in the United States. Yet many choose to ignore this warning and continue to smoke. This has led to many needless deaths.
“About half of all Americans who continue to smoke will die because of the habit. Each year about 438,000 people in the United States die from illnesses related to cigarette smoking. Cigarettes kill more Americans than alcohol, car accidents, suicide, AIDS, homicide, and illegal drugs combined,” the ACS revealed.
